If yours is one of them, transferring to Traf's Club doesn't mean starting over. You keep your existing plates, your existing permit number, and your existing renewal date, just with a club that runs everything digitally for $5 a year, less hassle.
Become a MemberThis page walks through exactly how the transfer works, what it costs, and, honestly, when it actually makes sense to do it.
What actually happens when you transfer
Moving an existing Club Permit to Traf's Club doesn't require a new roadworthy certificate, a visit to VicRoads, or a visit to us. The whole process happens from wherever you are:
What it costs
There's no transfer fee on top of that, and no fee charged by VicRoads for changing which club your permit is linked to.
When should you actually switch?
Here's the honest answer, not the one that gets you to sign up today regardless of timing.
If you're mid-way through your current club's membership year, there's a real cost to switching immediately: you'd be paying twice for overlapping periods, once to your current club (already paid, likely non-refundable) and once to us. For most people, it's not worth it financially unless something else is pushing the decision.
- Your renewal is within about six weeks
- Your current club has a meeting, AGM vote, or re-inspection coming up you'd rather skip
- You're adding a second vehicle and want both under one club
If none of that applies and you're mid-way through your current membership year, it might be worth waiting until your renewal is about six weeks out, since otherwise you'd be paying twice for overlapping periods. Set a reminder in your calendar for then, or get in touch and we can talk through your specific situation.
Transferring before you renew costs $5 for that first year, then your next renewal, and every one after it, happens through us at $50 a year, instead of whatever your current club charges plus whatever a compulsory meeting costs you in time.
Why people make the switch
The most common reason isn't price alone, it's the process. Legacy car clubs built around paper forms and in-person meetings work fine until you need something done quickly, or you'd rather not attend a meeting to keep a permit current on a car you drive a handful of weekends a year.
Traf's Club runs entirely online: digital signatures, a 24-hour turnaround on paperwork, and direct text access to the President rather than a committee.
If your renewal is coming up, or you've got a second vehicle you want under the same club, the transfer form takes a few minutes.
