Where you live in Victoria makes no difference to a club permit. The rules, the fees and the process are identical whether your vehicle is garaged in Mildura or Malvern, and Traf's Club runs entirely online, so there is no clubroom to turn up to and no catchment area.
- Where we operate
- All of Victoria, same price and same process everywhere
- Where we are
- Corinella on the Bass Coast and Kew in Melbourne
- Do you need to visit us
- No. Nothing in the process requires meeting us
- VicRoads visits
- Just one for new permits, or none with VIP. None at all if you are switching clubs
- The one real rule
- The vehicle's garage address must be in Victoria
What location actually affects
Nothing, and it is worth saying that plainly because people assume otherwise.
Not eligibility. The 25 year rule, the compliance plate date and the modification allowances are identical statewide.
Not cost. VicRoads fees are set centrally. Our membership is $5 for your first year and $50 after that, wherever you are.
Not which club you can join. A VicRoads-approved club can endorse a permit for any eligible vehicle garaged anywhere in Victoria. There is no requirement to join something local, and no requirement to join a club that specialises in your make.
Timeframes are the same too. A club change takes 1 to 2 weeks for your new sticker to arrive in the mail, and that is the same whether you are in Melbourne or Mallacoota.
The only step that needs you in person
A new club permit application ends with just one visit to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, where they process the paperwork, take the fee and hand over your plates, logbook and windscreen sticker across the counter.
Three things worth knowing about that visit:
- Any Customer Service Centre will do. You are not tied to one near your garage address
- No appointment needed. Walk in with the signed forms
- The vehicle does not need to be there. Which matters if the car is not currently registered and you cannot legally drive it in
If the nearest centre is a long drive, our VIP option at $70 extra removes the trip entirely. We attend VicRoads on your behalf and express post the plates and logbook to you. It is available anywhere in Victoria, and it is the one thing that makes a new application genuinely end to end from home.
The garage address rule
The one genuine location requirement in the scheme. The address where the vehicle is kept must be in Victoria, and it is the address the 100 metre logbook rule is measured from.
It needs to be where the vehicle actually lives rather than where your mail goes, which matters if you keep a classic at a shed, a farm or a holiday house rather than at home.
If you move, VicRoads requires you to tell them within 14 days. That is a legal obligation on every permit holder, not a club rule. Let us know too so our records match. If you are moving interstate, get in touch before you go, because that is a different conversation.
Out in the country?
We have members in every corner of the state, and two things tend to come up.
First, farm utes, old trucks, tractors and road-going machinery. Plenty of clubs will not sign for them. We will, and they are their own categories under the scheme rather than some sort of exception.
Second, the meetings. If your nearest club runs them and it is a three hour round trip, that is not a small ask. We do not have compulsory meetings at all, so there is nothing to drive to.
Anywhere in Victoria, same price, same process.
$5 for your first year, meetings never compulsory, and forms back within 24 hours.
